Silverton residents got a taste of what it would be like if a reality television show starring Mayor Stu Rasmussen comes to fruition.

A camera crew from RDF USA production company finished filming a teaser for the show last week, which will be presented to interested networks. The five-person crew spent three days shooting scenes around town, including segments at the April 6 city council meeting and the Silver Creek Dam.
The crew has returned to Los Angeles and will begin editing the footage and creating a three- to four-minute teaser. Although the project is in its infancy, Sara Hansemann, manager of development, said she thinks it has a good chance of reaching television.
Rasmussen's challenge of being a transgender person living in a small town would be the reoccurring theme. Aside from a glimpse into his daily life, each episode would feature intertwining stories, he said.

SILVERTON, Ore. - Silverton's controversial mayor may be at the center of a new reality show.
On Tuesday, crews were filming five-minute 'teasers' with Mayor Stu Rasmussen. These are short clips that will be pitched to several networks in an effort to spark interest in a possible show.
The mayor thinks this would be a good avenue to teach tolerance in small towns across the country. But there are some who worry it would bring more attention to the town than it needs - and the wrong type of attention. As expected, the news brought a mixed reaction from folks.
Rasmussen made headlines last year by becoming the first open transgender mayor in the nation. He has been a fixture in Silverton politics for more than 20 years and twice before had been the mayor of the small Oregon town - before he had breast implants and started wearing women's clothes in public.

Silverton, Oregon resident Steve Payton addresses the Silverton City Council with his concerns about the Silverton Dam, during it's regular monthly meeting on April 2, 2007. The dam is a large earthen dam constructed in the early 1970s. The Silverton Dam Awareness Committee, A group of citizens, are now lobbying the City for its removal due to safety concerns.
Silverton, Oregon Mayor Ken Hector reponds to Steve Payton's concerns about the dam at the regular April meeting of the Silverton City Council.

Quikrete withdraws application
DANIELLE PETERSON Appeal Tribune
March 4, 2009
After nearly six months, multiple appeals and a handful of protests, Quikrete has withdrawn its
application to establish a concrete packaging plant in Silverton.
While in the process of being appealed to the Land Use Board of Appeals, the Atlanta-based
company withdrew its application.
Community Development Director Steve Kay said Quikrete did not specify why, but he said he
knew that the company had been looking at other locations as well.
Quikrete had planned to locate in the former Redman Housing plant at 1204 Mill St., where it
would package dry concrete and mortar mixes.
Residents against the plant cited concerns with air quality, potential health hazards and noise.
Before applying in Silverton, Quikrete had considered a site in northeast Salem, where it
evoked a similar community response.
To combat the application in Silverton a group called Citizens United Against Quikrete was
formed. The group created a Web site devoted to the cause and staged three protests
preceding planning commission and council meetings.
"I'm happy that they withdrew their application," said Jim Squires, a member of the group. "One
reason is it saved quite a bit of money with the LUBA appeal. That's not a cheap venture."
"I believe it was a win-win for everyone. A lot of people worked hard for what they believe in.
And it sounds like Quikrete has found a more suitable location."
Ray Burstedt, president of the Strategic Economic Development Corp., the local
economic-development agency, said Quikrete is looking at another site in northern Marion
County, but he could not release any other details at this time.
Marion County Associate Planner Lisa Milliman said Quikrete submitted a land use application
in November for a site in the 19000 block of Grim Road, outside Hubbard. She said the
application has been approved.
Kay said no new land-use applications have been submitted for the former Redman Housing
site.
The Silverton Chamber of Commerce and Sedcor are working on recruiting new applicants for
the site, he said.
Silverton Chamber of Commerce Director Stacy Palmer said four or five people have
expressed interest in the site, but no one is seriously looking at the property at this point.

ANTI STU ?
Well I just got word that our Sunshine preschool will not be open next Tuesday because some "group" is holding some type of a national "anti" stu campaign in the church downtown. This is all hearsay and I do not have all the facts, but I have been told this will bring national media... I thought you all might like to be aware of what is happening.

Rasmussen, 60, is believed to be the first openly transgender mayor in the U.S. The story has drawn the attention of national media.
"I think Silverton is going to benefit from its 15 minutes of fame," Rasmussen said. "We (Silverton) have put ourselves on the map for a couple of reasons — we have The Oregon Garden and now we have a national first. I'm just an innocent bystander. I'm just me."

Decision still may be appealed to land use board
BY DANIELLE PETERSON • APPEAL TRIBUNE

The Silverton City Council has finalized its approval of an application that would allow Quikrete to establish a concrete packaging plant in town.
The application had tentatively been approved at the Oct. 6 council meeting by a majority vote, but under revised conditions. Stricter noise, air and drainage standards were imposed.
On Monday, a motion to adopt the resolution (that includes the revised conditions) passed 4-2, with council members Stu Rasmussen and Kyle Palmer in opposition. Council member Sherry Hoefel did not attend the meeting.
